Mira Costa Student Government began preparations for this year’s Carnival-themed Homecoming Dance in the Costa gymnasium, taking place on Oct. 22.

Student Government organized a pep rally in which the dance and cheer team will perform and announce the Homecoming Court. The pep rally will take place Oct. 21 during fourth period. Half of fourth period students, will be at the first pep rally, and the second half of fourth period will watch the second rally.

“Separating the Pep Rally is not about making it easier on the Pep Rally participants” sophomore Student Governement member Mckenna McCarroll said. “It is about raising spirit. By having two pep Rallies a year, we can bleed more green and gold than ever.”

This year’s Carnival-themed Homecoming Dance will feature cotton candy, popcorn, and a bingo table. Student Governement hopes that many students particpate in the dance.

“Homecoming should be something that the majority of the student body participates in,” McCarroll said. “There are many ways to make the Carnival theme a fun and festive dance.”

Students complained that in last year’s dance, sophomores and freshmen did not know that they were allowed to attend the dance. Most of the underclassmen thought that the attendance was like Prom, in which only juniors and seniors are allowed to attend; however all students are encouraged to attend.

“We have used advertisements to spread the word about Homecoming because of lack of attendance in previous years,” senior Student Government Vice President Mackenzie Austin said.

The Homecoming Dance last year was themed “Manhattan,” which brought New York City to Manhattan Beach. It had the least attendance of all Homecoming Dances with around 400 attendees, according to Student Government.
“I think the theme of last year’s dance was the best, but I am looking forward to this year’s dance,” Student Government advisor Lisa Claypoole said.
