The Mira Costa boys and girls cross country team hit the road for their first Bay League meet on Sept. 21 at Redondo Union High School. In a meet that included Redondo, Peninsula, Palos Verdes, West Torrance, Leuzinger, and Costa, the girls finished first and the boys ended up fourth.

Seniors Kelli Sugimoto and Jenna Tong led the girls in the race but the team finished in a tie with Redondo. The tie breaker came down to junior Yvette Sandoval, who finished sixth but came in at a faster time than Redondo’s sixth, giving Costa the win.

Seniors Zach Adler and Adam Perez led the boys in their fourth- place finish with times of 14:40 and 14:42, respectively. Perez fell within the first 100 meters, making it very difficult to bounce back and dropping him to an eleventh-place finish. Adler finished ninth in the race and senior Travis Taylor ended with a time of 14:50 and a sixteenth place finish.

“We are content with our fourth-place finish,” Taylor said. “But if we want to make and win CIF, we have to do better.”

The Mustangs run next on Sept. 28 at the South Bay Cup.
