The Mira Costa girls volleyball team ended their season in the second round of CIF against Orange Lutheran on Nov. 10, but ended the season proud and Bay League champions.

The Mustangs suffered their final loss of the season to Orange Lutheran in a total of five games, losing the last game by a mere two points, 15-17. Despite being eliminated early in CIF, the team is pleased by their accomplishments that they achieved throughout the season.

“Although we fell short in the end, I’m very proud of our wins and how hard we pushed,” junior Kelsey McIntire said.

The girls were able to overcome doubts by working hard in practice and giving it their best every single match.

“The season was overall a success,” senior captain Katie Warshaw said. “We exceeded expectations and started out the season with a low CIF rank, but worked hard in order to beat some very good teams.”

Despite losing to Redondo in Costa’s second meeting with the Seahawks on Nov. 1, the team was able to win Bay League with an almost perfect 7-1 record.

“It was great to win league,” Coach Lisa Zimmerman said. “It was a great accomplishment that we had really been driving for.”

For the Mustangs, beating the Redondo Union Sea Hawks on Oct. 13 at Costa was the key match to fuel their Bay League run. A win that stands at the top of the list for Costa’s athletes.

“Beating Redondo in our home gym was my favorite moment of the season,” Warshaw said. “The energy was awesome and seeing many students and community members support us was a thrilling experience.”

Although the team triumphed over many significant wins throughout the year, many of the players on the team say that they are proud of how close the team got throughout the season and firmly believe that is why they were as successful as they were this year.

“This season was one to remember thanks in large part to the great group of girls we had on this team,” McIntire said. “I don’t believe we would have had as great of a year as we did, if it weren’t for the bonding of our team.”

With the season finished, the Mustang’s will say good-bye to two departing seniors, Katie Warshaw and Maddy Klineman. Despite their inability to travel past the second round of CIF, the two girls feel as though they have participated in a successful season.

“This season definitely ranked first in my four years of Costa volleyball,” Klineman said. “Our team chemistry and dynamics were the best I’ve been apart of and we became so close on and off the court.”
