Mira Costa Model United Nations is hosting its 17th annual Los Angeles Invitational Model United Nations conference on Dec. 10 at Mira Costa.

LAIMUN, which is a novice-level debate, is a student-run conference put on by the Mira Costa MUN program. Senior Mackenzie Austin is in charge of the event’s coordination as the secretary general. Austin presides over the Costa students that have been involved in the planning of the conference, which will have 865 delegates from different schools and cities throughout the area.

“The conference is a way to show off Mira Costa,” Austin said. “It really gives the younger students a hands-on experience with Model UN.”

As a novice conference, LAIMUN serves as an introductory debate for beginner-level delegates. These younger Model United Nations students are given specific countries and topics to debate about in committees. These committees are run by upperclassmen Costa MUN members who are appointed as “chairs.”

“It should be fun for all of us to put our abilities to the test,” freshman Jamie Kelleher said. “I’ve put in a ton of time researching for my committee, and hopefully, it will wind up paying off.”
