The Mira Costa girls basketball team blew out the Leuzinger Olympians on Jan. 17 on the road. The Mustangs scored consistently throughout the game leading to their first Bay League win with a score of 71-28 and improving their overall record to 10-10 and 1-2 in the Bay League.

Sophomores Shaylyn Austin and Camille Mills scored on back-to-back shots in the first quarter.

“It is a good start to a winning streak,” senior captain Mackenzie Austin said. “We are on the right track now.”

The Mustangs ran away with the game in the third quarter. Junior center Rachel Humphrey scored followed by freshman Keilani Ikehara’s 3-pointer. Senior Jessica Tondo then hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to add to the lead late in the game. Leuzinger then missed two free throws, which led to Costa driving up the score.

“It was a great win for us,” coach Miranda Biteler said. “All of our players contributed today.”
The girls’ upcoming game will be against Palos Verdes Peninsula at Peninsula High School tonight at 6 p.m.
