Mira Costa Student Government is bringing back Winter Formal, which will take place aboard a yacht off Marina Del Rey on Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

This year’s formal, themed “Drop It Like It’s Yacht,” will be Mira Costa’s first Winter Formal in three years.

“[Student Government] conducted a survey last year regarding Winter Formal and found that there was not enough interest,” Student Activities Director Lisa Claypoole said. “But this year, activities and dances have been successful, so the decision to host a winter formal was made.”

Students will board the yacht at 7:30 p.m. and return at 11 p.m. Tickets will be sold until Jan. 27, priced at $44 for singles and $84 for couples with an ASB marker and $48 for singles and $92 for couples without the marker. The boat has room for 500 people.

“Expectations are high because there is limited space on the boat, but our goal is to sell out of tickets,” Student Government co-commissioner of entertainment junior Makenna Knudson said.

The formal will incorporate four decks, each with various attractions such as dining, scenic overviews and dancing.

“‘Drop It Like It’s Yacht’ will be one of the most fun events,” co-commissioner of entertainment McKenzie Becker said.

Casino Night, a new activity suggested by Principal Ben Dale, will occur on the yacht for the first time. The “gambling” games and prizes are offered as entertainment aboard the yacht.

“Traditionally, we have struggled with Winter Formal being a success,” Claypoolee said. “Therefore, our goal this time was to go some place unique with an off-campus experience that Costa students have not had before.”
