This year’s Winter Formal will take place on Saturday Feb. 6 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Redondo Beach and is being organized by senior Kendall Douglas and junior Jamie Hoffman, the Associated Student Body Commissioners of Entertainment.

This year’s theme will be “Manhattan to Manhattan,” alluding to going from Manhattan Beach to Manhattan in New York City. It was chosen from a list of the top five themes that ASB suggested and voted on together. Other potential themes included Candyland, Frozen and Masquerade.

“The theme has been done before, years ago, but I really like it and I think it’s pretty creative,” Douglas said. “New York was one of the original suggestions, but Ms. Claypool thought it would be good to relate it back to Manhattan Beach and to Costa so that’s what we did.”

Although at this time the dance has been successfully planned, Hoffman and Douglas did run into difficulties regarding the venue. Originally, they planned to have the dance at the Marriott in Manhattan Beach the venue was too expensive.

“At the Marriott, we would have had to charge about $80 per person which we didn’t want to do, so instead we moved the dance to the Crown Plaza, where we’ve had Homecoming before.”

According to Hoffman the job required hours of work dedicated to deciding on a date, colors for the decoration, a venue, picking a theme and designing the tickets.

“Coming into this process I knew that it would be a lot of work but it is also pretty rewarding,” Douglas said. “It’s nice to see everyone having fun and knowing that they get to see your work, specially when the dance is a success, which we think the Formal will be.”

Permission slips can be retrieved in rooms 41 and 42 at snack and lunch. Ticket sales began January 13th at the student store. Prices range from $38 to $80 on January 13th through the 23rd and then rise to range from $42 to $88 on January 25th to the 29th. Tickets will also be sold on the first of February but will rise to $50 a person and only cash will be accepted

“The minimum number of people that have attended Winter Formal is 300 and the maximum number of people that have attended is 500 so we’re hoping for around 400 people, which is why everyone should  buy their tickets early,” Hoffman said.
