Mira Costa’s National Honor Society inducted 100 new members on Oct. 25 at the annual new member induction ceremony in the cafeteria.

The NHS induction ceremony introduces and welcomes selected students to the program. The ceremony “officially inducts the students into NHS.

“The induction ceremony is the only way that inductees can be a part of National Honor Society, and the process is extremely symbolical to the program,” Bhakta said.

The induction ceremony was held in the Mira Costa cafeteria at 7:00 a.m. One hundred juniors and seniors were accepted into Costa’s chapter of NHS. Throughout the ceremony NHS president Adam Gerard and others gave speeches of acknowledgement for hard work. Symbolic candles were also lit to uphold the traditions of the society. After the ceremony, the new members received a breakfast.

“The induction ceremony went really well and everyone did a great job,” officer Meghan Burns said.

During the ceremony the officers each lit one candle. The candles represent and symbolize each of the four pillars of NHS, leadership, scholarship, service, and character. The candles were lit from the central candle called the lamp of knowledge.

“After the traditional candle lighting ceremony, each new member was recognized and given their certificate,” Burns said. “After, Costa principal Dr. Dale, NHS president Adam Gerard, club supervisor Mrs. Wachell, and superintendent Dr. Matthews gave speeches, recognizing the new members.”

NHS is a nationwide organization that recognizes high school students in their junior and senior years who excel in academics, leadership, service, and morale.

“To be accepted into this organization, applicants must show scholastic merit, leadership, and communal involvement,” National Honor Society officer, Jigar Bhakta said.

National Honor Society is highly regarded among college admission officers. The members of NHS are highly recognized and commended for their stellar achievement academically and altruistically. NHS offers many scholarships to participants.

“I am so happy to be a part of this program,” junior inductee Marisa DeSandro said. “Being inducted was a great experience, and I will never forget it.
