The Mira Costa girls cross country team competed in the CIF Southern Section Finals on Saturday, Nov. 17 and placed fifth overall, which means that they will advance to the State Championships.

Due to the rainy weather on race day, the officials were forced to use the “rain course” which is slightly shorter and contains less hills for safety reasons. Finishing first for Mira Costa was junior Abby Hong in 15th place overall with a time of 16:52. Second and third for Costa, both finishing with a time of 17:22 were senior Lauren Hagadorn and sophomore Emma Lautanen. Fourth for Costa and 56th overall was junior Kellie Jeong with a time of 17:52. The last scorer for the the girls was sophomore Natasha Bruinstein in 69th place with a time of 18:00.

“We run better with the hills so we were nervous that we wouldn’t have the edge we usually have when they changed the course,” Bruinstein said. “Luckily we were still able to do well and advance.”

The team will advance to the Southern Section State Championships in Fresno on Saturday, Nov. 24.
