Mira Costa girls soccer beat Marina High School, 3-0, and will advance to round two of CIF.

“It was a lot of people’s first CIF game which caused some nerves,” senior captain and defender Riley Hansen said. “We were also confident in our abilities to do what we’ve been doing this whole season and win the game.”

It was a quiet first half, with both teams having chances to score. However, it remained scoreless when the period was over.

“At halftime, we talked a lot about how getting a goal in the second half was needed,” senior captain Ellie Weissenberg said. “We came up with a better game plan to break the other team down, and, with our determination to score, it worked perfectly.”

All three of the Mustangs’ goals came from the second half. Weissenberg scored first, with goals from sophomores Amanda McKendry and Sydney Bushman following.

“That first win helped us gain the confidence we need going into this second round of CIF as we progressively play better teams.” Hansen said. “It felt great winning the first round game.”

The Mustangs played their second round game at Temecula Valley High School yesterday. Details for this game were not available at the time of upload.

“Winning our first game of CIF was a really exciting moment that I got to share with my teammates,” Weisenberg said. “I’m so proud of our hard work, and we are ready for game number two!”
