An artistic group of Mira Costa students decided to take its creations to a whole new level by putting them on display for all to see.

Coordinated by art teacher Katherine Martin, Mira Costa held its annual “All Media Student Art Show” from March 21-29 at the Manhattan Beach Creative Arts Center. The show gave students of all grades the opportunity to express themselves through many artistic mediums.

“I think that the Mira Costa Art Show is a great way for student artists like myself to showcase our talent,” freshman participant Jazmyn Johnson said. “It also gives the community a chance to see the skills Costa students have been able to gain in high school art and ceramics classes.”

Although many of the students who entered pieces into the show are enrolled in art classes at Costa, they were not required to be in the Costa art classes. The show was open to students of all skill levels, which allowed viewers to get a look at a wide variety of artistic talent.

“I was really excited about the art show because I knew a lot of people who had entered pieces in it,” sophomore Armance Sherman said. “The exhibit really showcased what our students have to offer everyone in the community.”

Students were allowed to enter pieces in any medium of their choice, such as acrylic paintings and ceramic clay. Many students who participated in the show are part of Costa’s ceramics program.

“Some kids started working on a piece as soon as they were told about the show,” junior participant Alana Yamashiro said. “Others put together old works they had done months before the show and entered them.”

The art show provides the Costa community with an opportunity to come together and see exactly what Costa’s students are able to accomplish outside and inside of the classroom.

“I’m just that type of person that gets inspired by different things,” Yamashiro said. “The piece I entered was inspired by a book I read called, ‘Molokai.’”

Like Yamashiro, students were able to draw on any experience inside or outside of school in order to create their unique pieces for the show. Many entrants feel that finding an inspiration was a crucial part of their development as artists.

“The art show was a really phenomenal exhibition of raw talent and creativity,” sophomore Aaron Chelliah said. “It truly embraced the individuality of each Mira Costa student and provided a medium for their self-expression to be appreciated. I was really impressed by all of the pieces that I saw there at the All Media Student Art Show.”
