MUN prepares for Edison

Mira Costa’s Model United Nations program is preparing for a conference at Edison High School on Saturday and Sunday in Huntington Beach.

Last year, Costa MUN received “Best Large Delegation.” However, fewer delegates won individual awards than in previous years.

“Last year’s conference wasn’t horrible,” MUN advisor Wayne Knutson said. “However, it did not rise to meet our usual standards. Now is the time to get to the next level. It comes down to who’s willing to pitch in the extra hour and who’s willing to do more work to get there.”

According to Knutson, the Edison conference is considered to be the most important of the opening local conferences, as the results will determine which Costa delegates receive invitations to compete in other conferences across the nation.

“We usually take a big group, probably around 115 Advanced MUN students, to the Edison conference,” Knutson said. “With Edison, we try to take absolutely everybody because Edison is a conference which helps determine who travels in the spring.”

Delegates from Costa’s rival schools, such as Huntington High School and Cerritos High School, will also be at the conference.

“If we do well at Edison, it means that we’ve hit the ground running,” Under Secretary-General Lynn Wang said. “We are ready for whatever our rivals can possibly throw at us, and we are especially motivated to do the very best that we can at this conference.”

MUN students are excited for the Edison conference and hope to improve as much as possible.

“Edison is a conference where you flex your muscles as a delegate and do as much experimentation as possible,” senior Zack Teitelbaum said. “In the broader scheme of things, it’s important to do your best and not to hold anything back.”
