Model UN prepares for future conferences

The Costa Model United Nations team will compete today and tomorrow at the annual advanced conference at Huntington Beach High School in Huntington Beach.

This debate is the first of three back-to-back nation-wide conferences.

“We always hope to do our best,” MUN advisor Wayne Knutson said. “As always, we hope to excel, to meet and to surpass our usual standards.”

Costa delegates are also attending the conference held at the University of Chicago in Chicago next weekend, and the National American Invitational Model United Nations Conference held at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C the following weekend.

“The last time we went to Georgetown, I felt the strength of our commitment and work ethic,” senior Lynn Wang said. “I know we can bring the same intensity.”

MUN plans to succeed despite minor setbacks in the first semester, including an off-campus gathering involving alleged underage drinking that was linked to Costa MUN students.

“The party was dispersed, no report was taken, and there was no citation of the host,” Resource Officer John Loy said. “The party was linked to the program the following week, and the issue was then taken to the principal and the advisors.”

The program also recently welcomed back advisor Robert Timberlake, who was absent for most of the first semester due to health reasons.

“The MUN program really wasn’t the same without him,” senior Tyler Lee said. “He is a very essential part of MUN. Not only is he a teacher, but he is a mentor to all of us. The things that he knows about the way it needs to be done and the way it should be done are irreplaceable.”
