Manhattan Beach plans repairs for beach stairs

In addition to a federal grant of approximately $1.4 million, Manhattan Beach has designated approximately $350,000 to implement multiple infrastructure projects.

The city will renovate 20 sets of stairs that lead from the beach to the strand, each with specific, necessary improvements, as well as implement two ramps.

“I’m very glad that the city has decided to renovate the stairs and walls,” community member Maritza Rivas said. “It can only help the community for the better, and it will provide a cleaner and nicer looking Manhattan Beach.”

The city has also decided to build at least two ramps for wheelchairs and strollers; however, the location of the ramps has yet to be decided.

“The ramp will help provide several opportunities so that all of our residents can have easier access to the beach and the strand,” City Council member Mark Burton said. “I am extremely happy, and I really believe that everyone in the city supports this decision.”

Final designs are planned to be completed by February in order to begin the construction as soon as possible. Due to the projected efficiency of construction, the committee believes that it is best to start the project in September in an effort to finish the construction and renovation by the summer of 2015.

“This new renovation project will provide better safety and ensure that the needs of all community members are met,” senior civil engineer Edward Kao said. “I am really looking forward to seeing what the end results look like.”
