The Mira Costa girls basketball team defeated Palos Verdes Tuesday night at home, with a final score of 64-28.

This win brings the Mustangs’ overall record to 14-8 and 3-2 in Bay League.

“I think if we keep playing the same way we have played, we could repeat as Bay League champions,” junior guard Hayley Tojo said.

In the first quarter, the Mustangs gained the lead over the Sea Kings. Senior forward Alison Bartak scored six points, contributing to the Mustangs’ 17-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

“We played pretty well tonight by keeping constant pressure on Palos Verdes,” coach John Lapham said. “Our press worked well, as did our half court defense.”

The Mustangs continued their lead into the second quarter. Senior center Michelle Lanterman connected on three consecutive jump shots, which helped the Mustangs extend their lead to 31-11 going into halftime.

“Our defense was better, and our press looks stronger,” Tojo said. “Our posts were doing well at getting rebounds on offense and defense.”

Costa started off the third quarter at a fast pace with the help of Tojo, who scored a quick seven points. Costa kept a commanding 45-18 lead to end the third.

In the final quarter, the Mustangs advanced their lead over PV, with the help of freshman forward Allie Navarette, who scored seven points.

Costa plays away tonight against West Torrance High School at 6 p.m.

“We have to come ready to play,” senior guard Camille Mills said. “West is the team stopping us from winning league.”
