During the second round of the California Interscholastic Finals, the Mira Costa High School girls basketball team dominated Alta Loma High School in a blowout win of 66-34 on Wednesday at home.
The win improves the girls’ record to 20-10 overall. Senior guard Camille Mills led Costa with 15 points while senior forward Allison Bartak put up 10 points in the victory.

“We are on a mission, and that’s to get a ring, so we make every possession count,” Mills said.

In the first quarter, Costa came out strong with Mills putting up five points and another six coming from freshman forward Allie Navarette, holding Alta Loma to only three points as they went into the second quarter, 21-3.

“We expected that Alta Loma would be physical and press us,” coach John Lapham said.

In the second, Costa maintained its lead, scoring 16 points, with Bartak, senior center Shannon Savino and junior center Patience Taylor each scoring for Costa. The Mustangs went into the half with a 37-11 lead.

“I knew, with the energy we came into the game, we were unstoppable,” Bartak said.

To start the third, Alta Loma got into the bonus within four minutes. However, Costa’s offense did not lack, ending with a 51-21 lead.

“After the third, we were all very excited because we knew we had almost won the game,” freshman center Alexa Underwood said.

In the final quarter, the Mustangs scored 15 additional points. Freshman guard Halle Maeda contributed to the scoring frenzy with three points of her own.

“We played well tonight,” Lapham said. “Our defense and our press led to a lot of opportunities to get into a fast break.”

Costa plays Cajon High School at Cajon on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

“This game boosted our confidence going into Saturday’s match with Cajon,” Lapham said.
