The 2014 Fantasy Football season kicked off this September 4 along with the NFL season. Millions of Fantasy Football owners around the world drafted teams and decided to participate in the ever-growing fantasy football game.

America’s pastime has never been bigger since the addition of fantasy football due to the fact that ESPN receives an estimated of $11 billion a year solely from Fantasy Football. Hundreds of Costa students participate in Fantasy football and compete amongst the world.

“Fantasy football puts meaning into a game that you would normally not care about,” junior Kyle Fiene said. “It’s also a fun way to compete with your friends.”

Many students at Mira Costa started to play Fantasy Football because of the influence from friends and the competitive nature that comes along with it. Some students never liked football, but Fantasy Football has dramatically increased their interest and time into the game.

“[Fantasy Football] has increased my knowledge mostly by introducing me to players I had never known before, and made me pay attention to in game stats than I ever had before,” junior Arjun Patel said.

Not only does Fantasy Football enhance viewer interest, but it also helps people discover the many unknown athletes. It allows people to study and understand player background and capability.

“Throughout playing fantasy football, I have had to discover new players that would improve my team, as well as finding out which players are able to put up good numbers and which players are not,” sophomore Trevor Taub said.

Also, Fantasy Football provides a friendly discussion amongst friends and a time to be able to enjoy the love of football at an even closer approach. Owners of fantasy football teams are able to research and decide which of their players will have the greatest opportunity for success.

“It’s interactive and allows people to have something to look forward to every Sunday,” junior Nick Brown said. “Anyone can participate and its always fun to win match ups against your friends.”

People spend hundreds of dollars betting on their fantasy football teams in order to challenge their friends and see who is the top fantasy football player. Fantasy Football makes you focus on your team when you have money on the line.

“I put money on my fantasy football team which not only makes it more competitive, but makes me want to watch more football games,” sophomore Max Taylor said.

In addition, a lot of people play fantasy football, so they can follow their favorite players and see how their player’s productiveness ranks amongst all the other NFL players. It is also an interesting game that reveals the owners success among other owners.

“My favorite player is Adrian Peterson and I play fantasy football every year to compete against the best fantasy players and to see how I rank up against the world,” junior Evan Wong said.

Lastly, Fantasy Football leagues help keep those in love with football to express their love even more. People like to follow certain NFL teams to watch their progression and help them succeed. However, with fantasy football, Costa students watch nearly all the NFL games to watch their players in action.

“I liked football because I love football, but once Fantasy football was introduced to me, I began to watch all the games all the time,” junior Ryan Saunders said.
