Classics for a Cause Club takes watching movies to a philanthropic level

Watching movies and helping the community are polar opposites that have been brought together for Classics for a Cause Club.

Junior Dylan Gallagher created the club which draws morals from various classic films that they use to inspire their volunteer work.

“I got the idea for the club after I did the Walk to End Alzheimers last year, and wanted to find a way to help causes and charities that need it,” Gallagher said. “I wanted to bring the idea of helping to Costa in a new and intriguing way.”

In addition to participating in the Alzheimer’s and Friendship Circle walks, Classics for a Cause members will raise money for these causes through bake sales.

“I see how much time and effort is put into researching causes and I, as well as my club members, want to be a part of that change,” Gallagher said.

The movies are chosen by suggestions and voting, and according to Gallagher, after the movies are watched, the club members discuss it and relate it to any kind of charitable organizations.

“My club is different because in other clubs you are assigned a charity or a task, whereas this club comes up with a common choice among students and contribute to that cause in a way drawn from the movies being watched,” Gallagher said.

The first movie chosen was “Away from Her,” and from watching this movie, club members came up with the idea to spend time working to end Alzheimers. The current movie, “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” will be discussed this month and club members will choose what they want to do to benefit causes.

“I have been looking for a club that is entertaining and relevant,” junior Callum Schelley said. “I get to do what people my age like to do like watching movies, while doing what I can to help people in need.”

The club meets every Tuesday and watches movies once a month.

“I feel this club will be successful because it combines being philanthropic, while watching some favorite movies,” Gallagher said. “Members are able to enjoy themselves while making an effort to help the world.”
