Reading is an integral part of education at Costa, and members of the Eager Readers Club are working to spread this to communities who lack the resources to provide reading material for their children.

The goal of Eager Readers Club, run by co-presidents juniors Mady Emerson and Delaney Hawkes, is to provide reading materials for underfunded schools and hospital libraries.

“What Eager Readers Club is doing is making sure that people who normally wouldn’t have access to texts and to books are getting them, and I think that’s a valuable thing,” English teacher and club sponsor Lisa Cook said.

Hawkes found her cause when she participated in a community service project with her family a few years ago. During the project, she witnessed the excitement of the children that were presented with new reading materials.

“The kids got super excited when they got the books, which was a bit strange to me, since books were something I’d always had around,” Hawkes said. “Seeing how happy those kids were when they got books made me realize how lucky we are to have the resources we do.”

Eager Readers Club has already donated to the American Book Drive, an organization based in Southern California that processes and redistributes used books to help various charities such as Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and the Care Foundation. The club is currently working towards affiliating with a struggling school in the future, while remaining busy collecting books.

“We are a new club that has only started this month, so we have yet to donate to a school because we are still in the collecting stage,” Hawkes said. “As of now, the only thing we are doing is collecting books but we hope to get in contact with a school soon.

Eager Readers Club meets every Monday in room 54. According to Hawkes, students are encouraged to take part in the club’s efforts either by joining or donating books.

“People should come to Eager Readers club because it’s a good way to make friends while participating in such an amazing cause,” Hawkes said. “Most people at Costa are very fortunate so they should be doing something to give back to the less fortunate, and Eager Readers club is a fun and rewarding way to do that.”
