The girls volleyball team went head-to-head against Mater Dei on Nov. 15 in the quarterfinals of the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs.
In the first set, Costa started out slow and fell into an early deficit, losing 25-13. Despite the loss in the first set, Costa won the second set with a score of 25-18.
“While we were feeling confident, we knew we had to stay disciplined,” senior outside hitter Ashley Anselmo said.
The girls attempted to keep their intensity up in the third set. However, the team lost the set 25-23. Costa then stormed back and won, 25-22, in the fourth set.
“We knew it would be close and would take everything we had,” senior defensive specialist Lindsay Chalmers said. “Unfortunately, we fell short this time.”
The girls took the game to the fifth set but were unable to win the game, which ended with a score of 15-12.
“Despite an early end to our season, we accomplished a lot and, hopefully, next year we can keep pushing further into CIF,” junior hitter Sam Snyder said.
Despite an early exit from CIF, this season’s highlight was winning the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, making this the first time the Mustangs had ever won this tournament. The Mustangs also played two games against Redondo, taking both to five sets. The Mustangs lost both games.
“I am proud of everything our team accomplished,” senior middle blocker Katie Rethmeyer said. “We worked very hard and remained incredibly focused. I’m so excited to see what the younger players are able to accomplish in their upcoming years.”
The team finished the season with an overall record of 27-8, going 9-2 in Bay League.
“Our team became a family and an extremely strong unit striving for the common goal of getting as far as we could,” sophomore Alexa Underwood said.
