On Jan. 23, the boys rugby team improved its overall record to 5-1-1, winning 19-10 in its final match of the regular season against Wilson High School.

The Mustangs started out strong, scoring the first try for five points, five minutes into the game; however, they failed to convert the two extra points. Ten minutes later, Wilson scored a try and the extra points, taking the lead, 7-5. Senior number eight Justus Tavai answered with a second try for Costa, ending the half 12-7.

“We finally came out after Wilson scored,” senior hooker Juwan Johnson said. “We knew we had to ride the momentum as far as it would take us.”

Early in the second half, the Mustangs furthered their lead with another try, making the score 19-7. Later, a Wilson player received a yellow card due to an illegal high tackle, causing him to sit out for the next 10 minutes without a replacement.

“Any time someone from the other team is taken out of a game, you have to use it to your advantage,” Johnson said. “Even though we didn’t score any points off of it, we got them tired, which helped us keep the lead.”

The Mustangs held the lead with a final score of 19-10.

“We battled hard and got the job done,” Tavai said. “There wasn’t a single best player in the game. We worked as a unit to accomplish the goal of winning. It was a team win.”
