On the Air with Erin

Most people dream of going to Coachella to discover new music, but senior Erin Clifford has created her own Coachella in the South Bay through her internship at Static Beach in Hermosa Beach.

At Static Radio, Clifford works on media updates about new music and viral videos. She books live acts for the station and plans a live radio show. She has also written about the Coachella lineup and what to expect in music in 2015.

“I am interested in all things entertainment like music production or producing anything in general,” Clifford said. “My hopes are to keep doing what I am doing. Working at Static Beach feels less like a required internship and more like something I am really passionate about.”

When applying for the internship, fitting into the environment at the station was an overt advantage. Clifford’s unique taste in music set her apart from the other applicants.

“I think my taste in music is very similar to what the station already plays, which is a lot of alternative beachy music” Clifford said. “When I came in for the interview, I brought a playlist of 30 songs that I thought would be a good set, and they fit the overall mood of the station really well.”

Internships can open up doors in their respective industries, and it is easier to get recognized after having experience in that field already, as Clifford has discovered through working at Static Beach.

“I plan to work on my own college radio station and possibly work with other Los Angeles stations.” Clifford said. “I’d really like to be a music producer when I’m older.”
