The Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees approved three additional positions in the theater department to help current management of the facility on Feb 4. at the MBUSD Board of Trustees meeting.

These positions include Coordinator of Theater Operations and Building Maintenance Helper, who will be restricted to a limited term. The third position only consists of a change in name of the Building Trades Specialist to Theater Technician, which better fulfills the requirements of the position.

“One of the reasons that the Theater Technician position was needed was because we’re opening a second facility, a black box theater at Mira Costa, so there will be two facilities which this person will be responsible for,” Executive Director of Educational Services Carolyn Seaton said.

Carry Jordahl, the current Building Trades Specialist Stage Manager and will have the opportunity to apply to the position of Coordinator of Theater Operations. This job description is more representative of what is required of the opening of the new facility that will have to be overseen.

“Even before the black box is set to open, the job description of Jordahl is not representative of his job requirements,” Seaton said. “After the black box theater opens the level of responsibility for this job will increase.”

One of the approvals at the board meeting by the district was the revised job description from Building Maintenance Helper-limited, to Theater technician Assistant-limited term. According to Seaton, there is already a substitute that is working who was hired by Jordahl while the new official position was approved by the Board for this job.

“The substitute currently working at the Theater Technician is a very strong candidate for the job,” Seaton said. “The job will still be opened to any qualified candidates who could form a pool of employers that can be used as needed.”

The positions that will be added are Coordinator of Theater Operations, a Building Maintenance Helper that will be restricted to a limited term, and a change in name of the Building Trades Specialist to Theater Technician so that it fulfills the requirements of the current employer in a better way. According to Executive Director of Educational Services Carolyn Seaton, community organizations rent out Costa’s auditorium, and the current Building Trades Specialist Stage Manager has to oversee all aspects of the facility.
