The boys varsity wrestling team took first place in Division VI of California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section championship, accomplishing something that the Mustangs had not achieved in over 10 years.
The Mustangs dominated against Shadow Hills in the championship match of CIF, winning 58-15.
“The CIF victory made the team ecstatic,” junior Kelly McNamee said, “We feel confident looking forward to next year.”
Costa won its Feb. 7 semifinal match against Faith Baptist high school with a final score of 65-18.
“We had several pins, and our team worked extremely hard to make it to the finals,” senior Lars Cameron said. “We are very content with our end result.”
The Mustangs were going to take on La Puente High School in the quarterfinals on Feb. 7, but La Puente forfeited.
“The forfeit gave us a lot of confidence going into the semifinal match,” Cameron said.
After the team went undefeated in Bay League, the Mustangs earned a bye for the first round of CIF, propelling them into the quarterfinals.
“Through every practice and tournament we had, there has been a constant war,” junior Alex Chaney said. “A war to prove ourselves to others through hard work.”
The Mustangs finished with an overall record of 11-1, and they are looking for a second CIF championship as well as another Bay League title in the upcoming year.
“While it’s nice to be CIF champs, this is just one year,” Chaney said. “I believe there are more titles to come.”
