As state curriculum has shifted to fulfill Common Core Standards, the Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees has started to take steps to integrate a new mathematics curriculum throughout the district.

At the MBUSD math program board workshop on Wednesday, the board discussed this year’s efforts to transition into new mathematics standards and its three-year mathematics professional development plan. This plan provides support to teachers through professional development at the district, site and individual level over the next three years.

“We felt it was essential to address all layers of professional development,” Executive Director of Educational Services Dr. Brett Geithman said.

Up to this March, the board has approved items to move to the new math standards, including MBUSD’s eight-step mathematics philosophy and Balanced Mathematics/Cognitively Guided Instruction, which combines application, procedural and skill fluency and conceptual understanding, ideas central to the Common Core philosophy.

“We have worked together for over a year to make these thoughtful recommendations to the board,” Geithman said.
