A merciful shutout.

Softball beat Inglewood High School on Wednesday in an 18-0 no-hitter. Senior pitcher Dillan Boeda and  sophomore pitcher Elliott Estes threw a combined perfect game with a total of 11 strikeouts. The mercy rule was enacted, meaning that the Mustangs agreed to call the game if they were up by 10 runs at the end of the fifth inning.

“It was a team effort to score 18 runs, and both pitchers threw a fantastic game,” sophomore first baseman Emily Eudy said.

The Mustangs (13-4) started off strong with a total of seven runs in the first inning. Costa was able to play at a faster place than Inglewood (0-4), which gave them an advantage over their opponents for the entire game. Freshman third baseman Grace Herron hit a home run in the second, and the Mustangs were able to score five runs in the third.

“Herron had a great day at the plate, which kept the momentum moving forward,” sophomore catcher Jamie Hoffman said.

During the fourth inning, senior shortstop Brittany Werre had a hit and then substituted out for senior shortstop Christine Orozco. Freshman second baseman Katie Gould had a base hit and a run batted in, sending Orozco around the diamond to home plate. With two runs in the inning, Costa led 15-0.

“The defense has been strong these past few weeks, and we have been able to hold people when necessary,” Hoffman said.

In the last inning, Eudy got hit by a pitch and senior catcher Denise Curtis followed with an RBI, scoring Eudy. Senior outfielder Samantha Matson also had an RBI, sending Herron home and finalizing the score, 18-0.

“We began the game strong, and we were consistent,” Boada said.

The girls have an overall record of 13-4 and are currently 3-0 in Bay League. They play Morningside High School today at 3:15 p.m. at home.

“We hope to continue the momentum as we move forward in Bay League,” Orozco said.
