Swim team defeats rivals Redondo Seahawks 89-81

The Mira Costa mens varsity swim team earned their third win of the season in a home game on Thursday against league rivals Redondo Seahawks. The Mustangs won, 89-81, through 42 events while the girls lost, 87-83.

In the 200 yard freestyle, sophomore Mark Warnecke took first with a time of 1:50.42. He won the event in a satisfying five second window. In addition, he placed first place in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 50.94 to secure 12 points overall for the Mustangs.

“The 200 Freestyle is my strongest event and by far my favorite because I have great stamina and speed,” Wernecke said. “I am looking forward to my next two years at Costa and to continue my hard work.”

The womens varsity swim team is 3-5 and 1-2 in Bay league, while the mens is 3-4-1 and 2-0-1 in Bay league. The team will compete in the Bay League Prelims on Tuesday and the finals on Thursday.

“I am looking forward to the Prelims next week and hope to earn a spot in the Bay League Finals on Thursday,” Wernecke said. “Practice has been key to the team’s and my success.”
