Manhattan Beach resident and retired Costa math teacher Evan Mikel passed away during the night of April 24th at the age of 73 due to natural causes.

He is survived by his two children, Jacqueline and Evan, and his granddaughter Morgan. In addition to teaching, Mikel was also a proficient swimmer, an impassioned liberal, a Drivers’ Education instructor, and an Eagle Scout.

“He certainly put himself out there, and wasn’t afraid of others rejecting his ideas or points of view,” MBUSD Substitute teacher and former colleague of Mikel Norman Burd said. “He was bold in the best way possible. It was an honor to work alongside such a great man.”

Mikel taught at Mira Costa for upwards of 35 years and spent his retirement in a Matthews Avenue home which he had occupied since 1969.

“He was a man who had clear goals, and wanted to achieve them through any means necessary,” Burd said. “Those are respectable traits, and I believe that the world is one great man short now.”
