The members of the Mira Costa High School track and field team that had previously qualified, travelled to Tranucco High School on Saturday to compete in the Division I CIF preliminary races.

The Mustangs had many athletes representing Costa in multiple events throughout the meet. The boys did not have any runners finish in the top seeds to continue on to the finals but sophomore Shante Robinson as well as senior Natasha Brunstein will advance into the next round for the Mustangs.

“I was determined going into this meet to perform as best as I could to not let myself or the team down,” Robinson said. “I am so excited to be going to the finals again this year and am just preparing myself for the intense competition I know I’ll be up against.”

Robinson qualified for the CIF finals by finishing first place with a time of 42.70 in the 300 meter hurdles and she also will advance after placing second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.82. As one of the two long distance runner to be competing in the finals, Brunstein will race in the finals after qualifying for the 1600 meter race with a time of 5:05.32.

“I had trained all year for this moment, running constantly to be the best I could be so I am so happy that my hard work paid off,” Brunstein said. “I’m looking forward to finals but I really just want to enjoy it by giving it my all and letting what ever happens, happens.”

Robinson also had a kick in both the girls 4×100 and the 4×400 relays to being the team back from behind into a qualifying position with a finishing time of 48.01 for the 100 race and 3:52.23 for the 400 relay event. These girls along with the other runners that qualified will travel to Cerritos College on May 23 for the CIF finals for Division I.

“All of our athletes were seen representing our school in very positive, strong way that makes me proud to watch,” Coach Moe Russel said. “It will be exciting to see their competitiveness come into full swing this weekend and I know they will all bring their talent and training into action to make it happen.”
