In the California Interscholastic Federation state finals for track, sophomore Shante Robinson took fifth place in the 300 hurdles on Saturday in Fresno. Robinson’s time was 42.27 seconds, setting a new personal and school record.

Robinson’s time to qualify for the finals was 42.77 seconds, and she placed 9th overall and 3rd in her 300-meter hurdles heat in the CIF Masters Meet on June 6.

“I was not satisfied with my performance in the preliminaries,” Robinson said. “I knew that the competition was going to be stiff, but I didn’t know the road to make it to the finals was going to be as challenging.”

Robinson’s time in the finals, 42.20 seconds, beat the school record, which was 42.27 seconds, and also her personal record of 42.27 seconds. Robinson was able to substantially beat her own time by training and pushing herself to go faster each time she races.

“I feel good about my performance in the finals, and I think I did well in my event this season because I finished with a new personal record,” Robinson said.

According to Robinson, she owes her success to the Costa hurdles coach Kelvin Gamble, junior sprinter Myah Elrington, and junior hurdler Fabian Frank-Love because they have pushed her to get better throughout the season.

“They all stayed with me during their off time to help me get better,” Robinson said. “They are constantly here for me, and I know they’re going to help me get farther in CIF next year.”

Next year, Robinson aspires to continue beating her personal records, the school’s records, and placing high in the State finals. She plans on furthering her skills by making improvements to her hurdling form at the gym and with trainers throughout the summer.

“My ultimate goal is to get under 40 seconds in the 300 hurdle race,” Robinson said. “ I would also like to run as low as 13 seconds.”
