The Mira Costa hockey team suffered its final loss of the season on June 2, 6-2, during the championship game against Redondo Union High School at the El Segundo Toyota Sports Center.

Redondo’s high intensity offense caused Costa to fall behind in the first period. The Seahawks scored within the first three minutes of the game. After that goal was scored, Redondo continued to create continuous offensive attacks, allowing Redondo to score once more. For the remainder of the first period, both teams kept up strong defense. At the end of the first period, Redondo was winning 2-0.

“The game was bad overall,” freshman Ty Dillman said. “We didn’t put enough effort in the game.”

The Seahawks continued keeping their momentum and scored four more goals in the last two periods. Costa was unable to catch up, costing it the win.

“We had a terrible start,” junior Wyatt Light said. “The team that scores first wins most of the time.”

In the second period, Redondo maintained control of the game and scored two goals early on. Costa’s energy finally kicked in during the middle of the period when senior captain Oliver Gable scored off of a pass from junior Ryan Ng. Redondo then ended the period scoring another goal, bringing the period to an end with a score of 5-1.

“When I was able to score in the second period, it was a good push for the team,” Gable said. “We started to get things together, but in the end the pucks just weren’t bouncing our way.”

In the third period, Redondo scored its final goal of the game on a power play, since Costa was down a player because junior Austin Bowkus was in the penalty box for cross checking. Ng scored the Mustangs’ last goal of the season off of a power play, ending the game 6-2.

“We were unable to score during the last periods,” Light said. “I have to give it to Redondo’s goalie and defense because they played very well.”

Though Costa was not able to pull out a final win, the team had an overall successful season, winning eight out of 12 games and ending second overall in Toyota Sports Center High School Ice Hockey League.

“We had our ups and downs,” senior Ryan Miller said. “However, we had a great teamstill found a way to get as far as we did.”
