Manhattan Beach Unified School District and the Mira Costa administration recently welcomed Kristin Wolberg and Karina Gerger to the Mustang family, after former vice principals Ian Drummond and Marianne Ramos announced their resignation.

Both are familiar faces among MBUSD, as Wolberg was an English teacher for six years at Manhattan Beach Middle School and Gerger was a Manhattan Beach Middle School assistant principal for the 2014-15 school year.

“I want them to love kids,” Dale said. “I want to see movement and progress from them.”

This year, Gerger will collaborate with guidance counselors to overlook master scheduling.

“It’s nice to be able to collaborate with others,” Gerger said. “Working at a high school is different; it is time to grow from middle school.”

Wolberg’s  responsibilities will include overseeing the technology and the Math Department at Costa. She will also handle issues regarding testing and attendance, such as excessive truancies, throughout the year.

“Coming to Costa, I felt very at home, as if this is where I belong,” Wolberg said. “I love it here.”

Over the summer, the four VPs and Dale went through technology and other training to get ready for the new year. Due to the last minute decision of Mr. Drummond’s resignation, Gerger did not get to prepare as much as the other vice principals.

“Dr. Matthews had to make a decision as to what he was going to do,” Gerger said. “He knew he needed someone pretty quickly so he appointed me from the middle school to the high school, as he knew that my skill set was one he thought would benefit the kids at Costa.”

Each vice principal oversees a specific grade level. This year, Gerger will oversee the 9th grade class and Wolberg will oversee the 11th grade class.

“I told my students I would always follow them,” Wolberg said. “It’s great seeing them progress and getting to work with so many familiar faces.”

Gerger will handle master scheduling and work hand in hand with guidance counselors. Wolberg’s  responsibilities include overseeing the technology and math department. She will also handle any attendance issues that arise as well as all testing that goes on throughout the year.

“No matter what comes to me, whether it is from a teacher, parent or student, it is my job to arrive at a decision that is in the best interest of the kid,” Wolberg said.
