Mira Costa’s boys water polo team placed third in the Steven Pal Tournament this weekend in Santa Margarita. The tournament’s top performer was senior attacker Jake Tolt who scored 17 goals throughout the tournament.

The Mustangs faced division opponents like Northwood which they defeated 16-6, Santa Margarita 8-7, San Marcos 13-10, and Damien 13-12. Their only loss was against Righetti, 12-11. In the five games played, Tolt felt like the team was confident of their abilities and demonstrated them throughout the tournament.

“I think we all played relaxed, and that allowed us to perform well,” Tolt said. “It is also good to get results like these against opponents in our division.”

Costa’s record is 21-5 overall, and 5-0 in Bay League. The Mustangs next match is an away Bay League game Tuesday against rival Redondo, 7-8 overall. According to junior attacker Mark Warneke, although the game against Redondo will be competitive, the main focus is to prepare for California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).

“Tuesday will be a hard fought game, and right now these games are just getting us better for CIF,” Warneke said.
