Mira Costa’s girls golf team won the first round of California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) with a score of 395 on Tuesday at the Los Serranos Country Club. Diamond Bar High School tied with Costa for first place; however, Costa’s sixth score, shot by junior Lexi Nielsen was lower, resulting in a win for the Mustangs.

The team’s top performer was senior Andrea Lee who shot a 70. Senior Marni Murez and sophomore Ashley Kim also contributed to the win by shooting a 76 and 78 respectively. According to Kim, the win really boosted the team’s confidence.

“We are so happy we won CIF today,” Kim said. “It wasn’t our best day, but we pulled through, and we tried our best. It all came down to our 6th player, and every shot counted.”

Costa is 13-0 overall and 6-0 in Bay League. The second round of CIF, which determines the team that will be going on to state, is on Thursday at Western Hills Country Club at 9 a.m. According to Lee, the team has been working very hard in order to win the second stage and move on to state.

“We are very excited to compete in the second stage of CIF,” Kim said. “We are just gonna take it one round at a time.”
