Mira Costa’s girls basketball team defeated Schurr High School, 80-46, on Dec. 28 in the second round of the So Cal Holiday Prep Classic tournament, held annually in San Diego. The Mustangs key player in the game was senior Jalyn Riggs who scored 10 points and got back defense quickly in transition.

From the tip off, it was evident that Costa was in control of the game. The Mustangs were able to gather a large lead in the first half due to quick shots on offense. In the second half, the team’s strong defense continued to hold off the Spartans.

“We kept our heads up and played hard basketball the entire game, especially at the start of the second half,” junior forward Mia Finney said.

The now 6-4 Mustangs will take on Oak Ridge High School Tuesday in the third round of the tournament. According to Finney, Costa will need to get more defensive rebounds in order to be successful.

“Schurr got a lot of offensive rebounds that we really should have gotten to, ” Finney said.
