Mira Costa’s girls basketball team defeated Palos Verdes High School 40-24 at home Friday in its sixth Bay League game of the season. The Mustangs top performer was senior Laura Sheckter who contributed ten points to the team’s victory.

Early in the game, the score remained tight; the game was tied at 17 going into the second half. However, Costa was able to increase its lead to a comfortable margin in the third quarter. The Mustangs continued to score in the fourth quarter and eventually sealed their victory.

“I think we played really well defensively,” sophomore guard Haley Herdman said. “Suppressing Palos Verdes offense was difficult, but by the second half we started to figure it out.”

The Mustangs are now 5-1 in Bay League and 14-7 overall. The team will play an away game against Peninsula on Tuesday. According to Herdman, Costa will have to continue its good rebounding in order to be successful against the Panthers.

“Rebounding on offense and defense is an important part of basketball, and will really be a key to our success against Peninsula,” Herdman said.
