Mira Costa basketball defeated La Costa Canyon High School 50-44 in the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic on Tuesday. The Mustangs were powered to victory by strong performances from sophomore guard Bobby Barkley and senior guard Johnny Mims.
Barkley scored 15 points and brought down a rebound while Mims had 17 points, two assists, three steals as well as grabbing five rebounds. According to Mims, the team was able to jump on the other team’s mistakes and take advantage of them to score points.
“I wanted to take advantage of every chance the other team was giving me,” Mims said. “My teammates also did a great job finding me in positions to score.”
The Mustangs are now 9-5 overall and will next play Oakland Tech High School in the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic in Torrey Pines. According to Barkley the team will be geared for a competitive game and have a lot of energy.
“We just need to come out with a strong mentality and want it more than the other team,” Barkley said. “That will be vital.”
