Mira Costa’s softball team struck out its opening weekend after losing 7-6 to Irvine on Saturday in a non-conference game at Cypress High School, with key performances by Jamie Hoffman and Emily Eudy.

The Mustangs were up by four runs until the fifth inning, when they let up six runs that put Irvine on top. The Mustangs could never recover and lost the game. According to starting pitcher Elliott Estes, the Mustangs’ defense was was strong throughout the game, but couldn’t withstand a final push by Irvine in the 5th inning.

“The defense helped us stay in it through game until the end,” Estes said, “We showed how good our defense could be, we just need to stay healthy and not make some mental errors.”

The Mustangs, now 0-1 overall, will play Carson later today at 3 p.m. in the second game off the weekend for the Cypress tournament. According to Estes, the team is working on changing their defensive strategy.

“We are working on improving our defense in order to have a stable defense to rely on, and also we are trying to build teamwork and chemistry,” Eudy said.
