Major League Baseball scouts lined the stands on March 18 to watch Culver City senior pitcher Nolan Martinez as he faced off against the Mustangs, but the attention soon shifted to Costa’s pitcher, senior Trevor Franklin, who pitched his first complete-game no-hitter.

Franklin pitched the entire game, only allowing two walks, against Culver City High School, a school that is currently nationally ranked for baseball.

“The overall win for our team was a pretty great feeling, especially to beat a team like that, and we’re just really excited,” Franklin said. “I think the goal of every player is to do what it takes to win, and I felt like I achievied that.”

Throughout the game, seniors  center fielder Reese Alexiades and  catcher Brett Davis made key defensive plays to help Franklin with his performance. Alexiades and Davis combined for eight putouts, preventing Culver City from having a single hit.

“It’s always been a great feeling being able to pitch behind such a tremendous defense,” Franklin said. “Brett and Reese have been making fantastic defensive plays throughout the season, and they didn’t disappoint when it mattered to help our team get an extremely important win.”

Last season, Franklin broke Costa’s record for most pitching wins in a single season, as he finished the year with a 9-0 record. Later that season, Franklin received his letter of intent to play baseball at Pepperdine University in the Fall of 2016. He signed officially on Nov. 12 in the Mustang Mall.

“Trevor has steadily improved his pitching and fielding all three years on varsity,” coach Cassidy Olson said. “What makes Trevor so great is that he is such a competitor on the mound. He never wants anyone to beat him.”
