“Everybody Wants Some!!” is an uplifting, comedic film that tells the story of a team of college baseball players that has quickly become one of the best lesser-known recent releases.
The film’s, silly jokes and impressive underlying message are more than enough to keep the audience engaged the entire time, as the Texas baseball team goes through its seemingly never-ending antics.
The story follows Jake (Blake Jenner), a newly-enrolled freshman at Southeastern Texas University, who joins baseball team. He gets to live in one of the “baseball houses,” where the entire baseball team is housed. He meets the rest of his teammates, who become his new friends. In the last few days before summer ends, Jake and his teammates have the time of their lives, navigating the new freedoms and responsibilities that come along with being a college student.
This comedy is the spiritual sequel to the famous 1993 classic, “Dazed and Confused,” directed by the same person, Richard Linklater. Some of the main actors include Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin, and Ryan Guzman.
The comedy in this movie is phenomenal, and leaves any viewer chuckling to his or herself often throughout the movie. While there aren’t many laugh-out-loud moments, there was a constant stream of simple jokes, which were just enough to keep the viewer engaged. The bantering between teammates and nighttime activities are constantly causing laughs.
One of the more important aspects of the movie however, was friendship. Even though they had just known each other for a couple days, Jake and his teammates showed an honorable amount of loyalty to their friends, even in tougher situations. Although this movie is a comedy, it gives purpose to viewing the movie rather than just laughing.
Additionally, the entertaining plotline is a recipe for success by keeping the viewer interested. This feel-good film displays the classic story about the new guy coming in, making friends, and finding a girl. The movie leaves the viewer feeling happy and proud due to its uplifting storyline of a new, out of place kid finding his way.
One of the highlights of the film are the characters. Jake is a relatable character, as he searches his new surroundings for friendship and love. Add on his goofy, fun-loving group of friends, and the cast is filled with extremely understandable characters, giving the viewer an opportunity to relate to their lives.
Another feature that stands out is the incredible acting. The entire cast is comprised of young, up-and-coming actors who have not yet seen a lot of screen time. Even with this setback, the acting was outstanding, as the stars authentically represent 1980s Texas, meeting all these colorful characters in your first week of college. For the disadvantage they were given with relatively unknown actors, this cast did an impressive job at making an exceptional movie.
Overall this movie combined a perfect amount of comedy, underlying messages, interesting characters, a captivating plot, and superior acting to truly create a special movie.
“Everybody Wants Some!!” is rated R, was released on March 30, and is showing in theaters nationwide.
