Mira Costa’s boys golf team was eliminated in its second California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) match of the season.

The boys golf team was eliminated in the first round of CIF team matches at the Mile Square Golf Course on Monday. The Mustangs started out strong but fell behind later in the match.

“The conditions were not ideal and we had a lot of high score which didn’t help us in the end” sophomore Jack Major said. “We could have played much better as a team and we have the potential to play better.”

Freshman Max Huggins ended the day with a score of 75. He started out strong and hit birdies on holes four, five, and six. Later in the game, he hit a nine-foot putt earning him a par on the twelfth hole.

“I was proud of my performance today because I came out and gave it my all,” Huggins said. “Although I had a few rough holes my overall consistency was decent and I was able to put up a solid score.”

Major came in with the lowest score of the day at 74. On the first hole major hit a nine iron shot landing just 40 feet from the hole which he later put in for par. He shot a birdie on hole 7 and ended up getting a par on the last hole due to a 13-foot putt.

“I wasn’t hitting the ball that well and my consistency could have been much better,” Major said. “I was able to get many par and birdie shots, but overall I could have played better and made less mistakes.”

Senior Nick Harry came in with the low score for the day as well and shot a 74. His shot a bogey on his first hole but recovered with two par shots on holes two and three. He finished strong with a eight-foot putt earning himself a par on the last hole.

“My swing was a bit off today but I was able to chip a lot of my shots close to the hole which was crucial in the game,” Harry said. “I was able to get a decent round but I know I could have done better.”

Costa finished its season 12-3 overall and as the Ocean League Championships at 8-0. The team has no further matches and Major says the team hoped to make it farther in CIF, but overall the team had a strong season.

“We had a good season and I am proud of all the accomplishments we achieved,” Major said. “We improved throughout the season and we really started to develop as a solid team during the season.”
