Often, one walks through life believing they are truly unique and disconnected from those around them. However, as shown in “This is Us,” there is a connection that is sometimes unseen.
“This is Us” is an entertaining television show that provides a tasteful blend of humor and emotion weaved together. The combination of tear-jerking scenes followed by comic relief as well as delightful writing, complex characters and an engaging plot, makes it an unforgettable show.
“This is Us,” a new comedy/drama on NBC, follows main characters Rebecca (Mandy Moore), Jack (Milo Ventimiglia), Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Kevin (Justin Hartley.) The pilot simultaneously follows the separate characters on their 36th birthdays, each character at a different stage in their life.

The unique plot is told through vignettes that reveal the traits of the characters. Rebecca and Jack are having triplets, Randall has found his estranged father, Kate has decided to lose weight, and Kevin is in a rut in his career. Gradually, each separate part comes together, in a twist that entices the viewer and leaves them eager for the next episode.
Due to its nonlinear plot, “This is Us” tangents from the typical comedy/drama mold and creates a show that is intriguing and refreshing. Although the characters’ stories are not intertwined in the literal sense, the characters are all struggling with the acceptance of growing older and all share the same birthday.
The plot of “This is Us” features a balanced mix of comedic and emotional scenes. Frequently, during serious or emotional scenes, lines of dialogue will break the tension and provide a comic respite. However, this technique is not overused and some scenes are purely moving and emotional, giving a more serious tone to portions of the show.
Along with its engaging plot, “This is Us” also has beautifully written and well developed characters. Each character has a unique set of traits and a particular life goal. As they struggle to reach their goal, their friends and family help them along the way, inspiring the viewer.

“This is Us” features a star-studded cast. Not only does the famous cast to bring attention to the series, but their performances are believable and moving. Through their acting, the characters are brought to life, making them relatable to viewers.
While “This is Us” excites with an interesting and enticing plot, it is difficult to tell from the first episode if there is enough content to keep future episodes interesting. However, this also makes the viewer want to keep watching to see where the series will go.
Overall, “This is Us” successfully breaks the comedy/drama mold through its unique vignette style storytelling, complex character development, tasteful sense of humor, and impressive cast. The premiere episode sets the stage for a wonderful series to come.
