Making music is a process requiring immense dedication and skill to become successful.

To senior Gabby Franco, singing and playing guitar is a part of her lifestyle. Franco practices every day and takes the opportunity to perform and showcase her skills whenever she gets the chance.

“I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t singing,” Franco said. “It has been a very impactful part of my life ever since I was born.”

Lessons were never necessary for Franco to learn music as the entire Franco family either sings or practices some form of music, a cause of her inspiration and dedication, Franco said.

“Hearing her singing and playing guitar every day in the house constantly makes me smile,” Franco’s mother, Casey Franco, said.

Over the last year, Franco has landed performances at a number of venues. She has performed at private parties, special events and local businesses around the South Bay. Some examples include Relay For Life, a local wine shop called “Uncorked,” and numerous In House Arts performances showcasing of young and talented artists who share work, gain experience in performing, and inspire one another.

“My favorite performance so far was when I sang during the cocktail hour for a wedding last year,” Franco said. “It was really exciting to know I was a part of one of the most important days of a couple’s life.”

To land performances, Franco reaches out to local businesses and asks people who may need a performer for an event. Every once in a while, businesses reach out to her after seeing her perform.

“I make time in my schedule every day for music because it is one of my favorite things to do, and it is one of the few things that allow me to escape the stress of my everyday life,” Franco said.

In addition to singing, Franco said that she incorporates her guitar skills into her music to bring more noise and excitement.  Having multiple musical talents allows her to stay interested and passionate about her work, Franco said.

“I love to play guitar because it gives me the ability to rearrange songs and perform them in new and unique ways,” Franco said.

While Franco performs covers, she has been dedicating a significant amount of time into putting together lyrics and eventually a song. She shares the music that she sings with friends and family, using her Instagram page, @gabmusic, where she posts videos of herself singing.

“It makes me extremely happy to see Gabby finding so much joy in performing and practicing her music with her classmates and peers,” Casey Franco said.

Rather than having a constant group of people that she works with, Franco prefers to meet new Costa musicians like herself. She is an active participant at the Mira Costa In House Arts each month. In the future, Franco hopes to improve upon the quality of her guitar playing and singing.

“I love collaborating with other people my age, and In House Arts is a great way to meet fellow musicians that want to perform and become better,” Gabby said.
