The girls golf team failed to qualify for the second round of team CIF on Oct. 28 at Seden Hills Country Club in Hemet. With an overall score of 422 and a sixth-place finish out of 13 teams, the Mustangs’ season came to a close.

The team was led by freshman Megan Kim, who shot a team-low score of 76. By shooting four shots over par in the 18-hole course, Kim finished the match in the top 10 out of over 100 varsity golfers from all across California.

“We did okay, but the team didn’t play to its full potential. Part of this was because the fairways were very rough, which gave the girls a lot of trouble. It made the course much harder, which was a factor in our loss,” Kim said.

Other notable golfers in the match were Mika Pascual, who shot a score of 81; sophomore Raquel Gordon, who shot an 87; and freshman Jenny Johnson, who shot an 89. The girls, although discouraged by their scores, are satisfied with the triumphant year they had together as a team.

“I am really impressed with the way the girls competed this year. Although they didn’t shoot their best in the team CIF, I am proud of the way they led our team this season,” Hands said.

Next year, the varsity members will return and the team will likely have other players coming in from JV who will have improved. Regardless of their loss, the team is looking forward to its future.

“I am very optimistic of our chances to contend for another Bay League title in the years to come due to the depth our team has,” coach James Hands said.

Despite the end of their competition in team CIF, Kim, Raquel Gordon and sophomore Kari Gordon participated in the first round of CIF individuals on Nov. 1. Kim was the only golfer to move on to the next round with a score of 85. Raquel and Kari Gordon barely missed the cut off, with scores of 88 and 91.

“Although I was not happy about my last match, I am proud of what I achieved this season. I was co-captain as a sophomore, and I take pride in that. I really grew as a golfer and, hopefully, I can come back as a stronger player,” Raquel Gordon said.

The next round of the CIF individuals will take place on Nov. 8 at the Las Posas Golf Course.

“I did not perform as well as feel I could have, but I’m happy I qualified. I think I need to go into the next round more confident and positive so that I can work better through adversity,” Kim said.
