Derek Kolstad and Chad Stahelski’s “John Wick: Chapter 2” is an action packed movie centered around the notorious ex-hitman, John Wick.

John Wick: Chapter 2 is an entertaining film with minimal dialogue, constant violence, and stylish scenery.  However, the lack of emotions and plotline in the film make it hard for the viewer to fully be drawn into the scenes.

The opening scene immediately starts off with a car chase, guns being fired, and men being killed, ultimately resulting in John Wick retrieving his stolen Mustang car. Shortly after he arrives home, he is visited by Santino D’Antonio, boss of the Italian Mafia and crime lord, who requests that Wick kills D’Antonio’s sister. Wick is forced to accept this challenge unless he would like to forfeit his life.

Wick then embarks on his journey to Rome to assassinate D’Antonio’s sister. On his mission, he faces many people who cause problems due to his well known name. He ends up having to fight and kill an unfathomable number of people in order to find safety shortly after discovering that D’Antonio has turned his back on him.

The surreal situations throughout the movie provide a positive, comical approach to the mass murdering. Two men fire at each other in an open crowd without the people around them acknowledging the situation, giving this kind of comedic relief helps lighten the violent mood by taking a comic-book-esque approach, relieving the audience of stress.

Violence and shootings were constantly occurring in many locations. Not more than 10 seconds would go by without someone getting shot or knocked out, keeping the viewer engaged. The mass amounts of actions kept the viewers on the edges of their seats, waiting to learn what would happen next.

The Guardian shares their opinions on John Wick: Chapter 2.

The creative and engaging settings specifically stood out and helped take part in keeping the viewers interested. The men all fought in various locations throughout Rome and New York City. Guns were fired in familiar museums, concerts, subways, and numerous historical sites in Rome, creating a more realistic environment.

By the end, it is obvious to the viewer that no matter how many gun fights Wick encounters, he will still be alive. As the fights progress, Wick’s immortality becomes tiresome and repetitive.

This predictability throughout the movie creates a lack of suspense.

Common Sense Media shares their views on John Wick: Chapter 2.

Although the violence was slightly excessive, overall “John Wick: Chapter 2” was well directed and contained many fascinating scenes that ultimately kept viewers engaged throughout the entire movie.

“John Wick: Chapter 2” is rated R and was released in theaters nationwide on February 10.
