Softball defeats Morningside 20-0

Senior pitcher Elliot Estes wars up with sophomore catcher Jamie Hoffman and junior shortstop Morgan Ingham before the Mustangs 20-0 victory versus Morningside. Estes would give up one hit, and no runs throughout the game securing the Mustangs lead.

Hit after Hit. A one sided affair ended in a win for the Mira Costa Mustangs softball team over Morningside 20-0 on Friday.

The Mustangs defeated Morningside in a blowout game, using skillful passing between the bases to keep the opponents from getting any scoring chances. On offense, Costa hit the ball well and kept on scoring throughout the game.

“I thought our team played really well today on defense and offense,” junior batter Serena Ponciano said. “It was one of our best games all year.”

In the second inning, The Mustangs scored 5 runs with senior batter Jamie Hoffman leading the way. She had a triple, scoring 3 runs. The Mustangs relied on pitching from senior pitcher Ella Estes to secure their lead.

“The game was really close in the first inning and our pitcher Ella Estes did a terrific job helping us keep our lead,” Hoffman said.

Junior shortstop Morgan Ingham kept Morningside from running any bases with quick passes and tags to get runners out. Offensively, the Mustangs kept hitting the ball, generating more and more runs.

“It was a great defensive game,” Ponciano said.  “Our pitching was great like always as well as our fielders.”

In the sixth inning, Ponciano doubled scoring three runs, making the score 18-0. Meanwhile, Costa’s defense limited Morningside’s batters to no hits through 6 innings.

“Our offense was really excellent today,”Ponciano said. “On defense, we played our style and limited their batters.”

The final inning was another inning that Morningside went without any hits due to Costa’s defense. Ingham hit a triple which scored two runs, and the Mustangs were now up by 20 runs.

“Ingham and our whole offense was on fire today,” Hoffman said. “It was a great defensive effort and offensive effort, hopefully it continues.”

Costa next plays at Redondo Union on Wednesday in a Bay League game. Costa is 4-2 in the Bay League, and 11-5 overall. According to Ponciano, Costa must continue to play their style in order to win.

“We must continue to play terrific defense and generate more offensive chances and runs to be successful,” Ponciano said.
