The Mira Costa Badminton team took second place in a home tournament after competing against schools including Loara, Fairmont Prep, Arcadia and Long Beach Poly High School on Mar. 10 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club.

With varsity players playing in their own tournaments, mixed doubles junior duo Lulu Yu and Moose Cohn placed second after competing against the top two teams from Arcadia High School. Yu also came out strong in girls singles event to place second. For boys team, singles player Eric Mei placed first, with doubles partners Henry Yu and Tiger Hao also placing first in consolation.

“This tournament was a grueling yet joyful experience for me because I was able to play considerably well even with an injured back,” Mei said. “I was also very pleased to see an outstanding performance from everyone else on the team.”

The Mustangs are 0-1 overall and will next play Gahr High School on Mar. 14 at a home game at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. The team will work to improve teamwork and focus on accuracy in placing shots, said Cohn.

“The whole team played great in the tournament on Saturday,” Cohn said. “Especially with our number one boys singles, I’m looking forward to the Gahr game.”
