Mira Costa’s badminton team defeated Long Beach Polytechnic High School 18-3 on Thursday Apr. 12 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. The top performers included junior Lulu Yu and senior Scarlett Luo for their consistent and accurate serves.

The Mustangs swept Long Beach Poly by winning in all of their mixed, girls singles, boys singles and boys doubles events. Costa took an early lead against the Jackrabbits, as mixed singles and doubles players went undefeated and brought home 13 points. Boys doubles sealed the victory by coming out strong to crash their opponents with scores of 21-15, 21-11, 21-5 and 21-17.

“Today was a good day for Mira Costa Badminton team,” senior Audrey Mei said. “I think we really made a huge progress compared to the beginning of the season through hard practice.”

Costa now holds an overall record of 2-2 and will next compete in a tournament at Azusa High School on April 14th. The team is nervous for the upcoming tournament as there will be loads of competitive players from rival schools, according to sophomore Alisa Chen.

“I’m really proud of the team for bringing out their best during the game,” Chen said. “The teamwork between the doubles players was on point and we’re really satisfied with the results.”
