Mira Costa students participated in the National School Walkout on April 20 during nutrition, where they walked off campus to advocate for improved gun control legislation.

Students across the country led the National School Walkout movement to protest congressional, state and local failures to take action to prevent gun violence. The walkout marked the nineteenth anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting that took place in Littleton, Colorado, where two teenagers killed 13 people and wounded more than 20 others.

“The walkout was an effective way for students to actively voice their opinions,” senior Lauren Friedrich said. “Gun control is such an important and prevalent topic and doing a second walkout helped to re-publicize the issue.”

After the first walkout took place on March 14, senior Warren Binder created an Instagram account, @mchswalkout, in order to notify the student body of gun-related news such as updates to gun legislation.

Approximately 100 students attended the walkout, which students walked outside of the administration building, down Artesia Boulevard and Peck Avenue.

“It was such a positive environment and everyone was walking together for a common cause,” senior Julia Nuttall-Smith said.

According to Binder, there are no future plans for another school walkout. He has currently been in contact with the National School Walkout in order to come up with ideas for students to have their opinions on gun control heard.

“The walkout was smaller than the previous one, and the purpose of it was to keep gun control relevant on our campus,” Binder said.
