The Mira Costa Badminton team was defeated by Westminster High School 19-2 in the first round of California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Team Championships on May 8 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. The Mustangs fell one stroke short of team championship playoff for semifinals, alternatively advancing to the consolation semifinals.

Overall, mixed doubles successfully pulled off two wins out of their five matches, while boys singles were unable to score a point. Girls singles players Lulu Yu and Scarlett Luo routed their opponents by winning all of their four events 21-8, 21-6, 21-7 and 21-3. Doubles duo Audrey Kim and Audrey Mei earned two points by scores of 21-6 and 21-14. Boys doubles duo Henry Yu and Tiger Hao also contributed by coming out strong to beat the Lions 21-8 and 21-19.

“It was a really close game and every single one of us just worked so hard to beat our opponents today,” Kim said. “Westminster is definitely one of our strongest rivals and we all wanted to beat them by putting our best effort in.”

Despite the loss Costa suffered in the first round of CIFs, the Mustangs will next take on San Marino High School in the consolation semifinals on May 10 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club.

“I think overall we have strengthened each of our separate event areas,” Yu said. “Even though it wasn’t the outcome that we wanted, I didn’t witness one player quit throughout the whole tournament.”
